TEACHER: Do you work or do you still go to school or college?
JILL: Well, I do both: I go to work in the daytime, and in the evening I go to college.
TEACHER: What about you, Peter?
PETER: I’m only 15. I just go to school. Sometimes, I work as a news assistant for my brother after 4.
TEACHER: John, may I ask what you do?
JOHN: I work as a broker at the Moscow Stock Exchange.
TEACHER: Very nice. … Now, Mary, can we find out what your occupation is?
MARY: Sure, I teach French in a private school for girls.
TEACHER: What do you like to do for fun? Do you like swimming?
MARY: Yes, I love it—and I rarely get cold in the water.
TEACHER: What about your friend? Does he like swimming?
MARY: Yes, he does, too.
TEACHER: Does your friend like driving?
MARY: No, he doesn’t, but I do.
TEACHER: Well, Nick, are you ready to tell us what you like to do?
NICK: Yes. I like riding motorcycles.
TEACHER: What about you, Jill? Do you like that, too?
JILL: No, I don’t. It’s too dangerous in Moscow because there’s so much traffic.
TEACHER: Suppose it’s a very hot summer day today. What would you like to do?
JILL: I’d like to have some ice cream (= an ice cream cone).
TEACHER: What about your boyfriend? Ice cream, too?
JILL: Oh, no, I think he’d prefer a cold beer--a couple of beers.
TEACHER: Okay, but suppose it’s a very cold winter day. Would you like ice cream or soda?
JILL: Of course not. I would like neither.
TEACHER: What would you like then?
JILL: A nice hot coffee.
TEACHER: Well, Ted, would you like some hot coffee, too?
TED: No, no, no, I just need a little hot milk to keep me warm, but I rarely get cold in wintertime.
TEACHER: Okay, let’s say you’re on the beach right now. Would you prefer lying in the sun to playing volleyball or, would you rather be swimming?
TED: I’d prefer swimming if the weather were good and the water warm.
TEACHER: What about your girlfriend? Let’s suppose that she’s on the beach, too.
TED: I think she’d prefer sunbathing to anything else.
TEACHER: Now, let’s try to imagine you’re in an autumn forest. What would you like to do? Just walking, hunting, or having a picnic?
TED: As for me, I’d prefer just walking or picking mushrooms if there were any. My brother would go hunting and my sister would want a picnic.
TEACHER: Does your father make much money, Jane?
JANE: Why do you ask?
TEACHER: Well, just out of curiosity...
JANE: Yes, he makes a lot of money.
TEACHER: What about your father, Sam?
SAM: Well, actually, he never tells me, but our family seldom lacks money. ... What about you, sir? How much money do you make?
TEACHER: Why would you like to know that?
SAM: Just out of curiosity, too.
TEACHER: I make just enough not to work hard. ... Now, suppose you’re thirsty and you go to a cafe. What kind of drink would you like?
SAM: A cup of tea with milk.
TEACHER: Now suppose that you’re hungry and you’re sitting in a restaurant. What would you like to eat?
SAM: Well, some soup for the first course, then roast beef for the main course, and ice cream for dessert.
TEACHER: What about you, Jessie?
JESSIE: Nothing for the first course. Some porridge, then some pancakes with sour(ed) cream, and as for dessert, I would like some orange juice.
TEACHER: Oh! I’m so hungry now. I’m going to head over to the nearest restaurant or cafe I can find!
