Part One: Frank’s monologue

Hello! My name’s Frank Clinton and I’m in no way a relative of the American ex-president Bill Clinton. We’ve arrived at the Grand Hotel today. The one is in London. “We” means my parents, my younger brother and myself, of course. We’ve already received the keys to our rooms and right now we’re heading for them. We’ve got two double rooms. We haven’t seen them yet. I’m naturally wondering what they (might) look like. I wish my brother’s room and mine wouldn’t be (= weren’t) a two-by-four one. I hate (= dislike) staying in close (= stuffy) rooms. I like everything real big. No kidding!
Feeling greatly tired, my parents are going in the lift. My brother Nickie is following me upstairs to the fifth floor. It looks like the Grand is terribly big with Nickie. He’s, by the way, going to live in a hotel for the first time in his short life. My kid brother’s only seven. I’m twice as old than him. I am big.
The hotel in question is rather small but very old, cosy (= Am. cozy) and, naturally, pretty expensive. There are only six floors with five different rooms on each one; single, double rooms and suites [swi:ts] for well-to-do (= well-off) people. We’re not very rich, but rich enough to enjoy a hotel like the Grand.
Why do you think I happen to know something about this hotel? ... Can you guess? ... (Been here before? = Have you been here before?) ... Oh, yes. You’re damn right. I’ve already been to the Grand Hotel before. My parents and I stayed at this hotel seven years ago. Mum was then in the family way. I mean she was pregnant. My father, Mr. John Clinton, brought her over here then for her to bear Nickie. It looked like a tradition because I was born in this very hotel, too. See how frank I’m being with you now. Oh, sure! It’s because I’m Frank. Frankly speaking, though, I’m talking big. ... Well, our room must be 23. ... No, not this one. ... Ah, here it is (= Ah, here’s the/my room)!

Porter: This is the fifth floor. Here are your rooms. Number 19, on your right, is yours, Mr. Clinton, and number 23, the one on the left, is for your boys. Almost next door. Mr. Clinton: Thank you, Sam. ... Where are our suitcases? Have you taken them up yet? Porter: Yes, sir. Here they are. Right behind you. Mrs. Clinton: Take them into the rooms, please. ... Where are the boys, John? They should be somewhere here now. Mr. Clinton: Oh, don’t you worry, Susie. The children must be still walking up. I bet nothing bad will ever happen to them in the Grand. It’s a safe place. Porter: Yes, madam. We never let any strangers in. ... I’ve already carried the luggage inside, sir. Mr. Clinton: Very nice, Sam. You’ve been very helpful, indeed. Here’s a pound. Porter: Thank you, Mr. Clinton. You can call me any time you need me. You’ll find the room service telephone in the directory under the Bible. Mrs. Clinton: Ah! Here you are! Frank, Nick, you’ve been way too slow. What’s up? I’ve already begun to worry a little. What took you so long, boys? Frank: You’re always worrying for nothing, mother. Nickie: Yeah! We are no babies, Mum. We never thought you would be that jumpy. We’re sick and tired of your constant worrying about us, aren’t we, Frankie? Mr. Clinton: How dare you talk to your mother like that! Stop getting smart right away, son! Nickie: Sorry, Dad, but I don’t like the way she — Mrs. Clinton: Little Nickie’s growing too independent, John. ... All right, boys, let’s go see your room. I’m just wondering what it looks like.

Frank: Is this our room, mother? Mrs. Clinton: Oh, yes. This is your room. I hope you’ll both like it. ... Is it big enough for you to play in? ... Look! There are two big windows overlooking the Thames. Frank: Oh, sure. We can play football in here. Thank you, Mum. That’s just what I tried to picture. Do you like it, Nickie? Mr. Clinton: Where’s the kid? Where’s he gone? Nickie boy! Nickie: I’m over here, father, in the hall! Come and look what a cool aquarium I’ve found. Such big funny fishes. ... Frank, over here! Mrs. Clinton: Okay. Let’s go see what the little boy’s found out there (in the hall).

Mr. Clinton: Come in. Chambermaid: I’m the chambermaid. I’ve brought your cold drinks. Mrs. Clinton: Thank you. Put them over there near that armchair. ... Well, there’s only one blanket on our bed. We’d like two ones. Chambermaid: Yes, madam. Anything else? Mr. Clinton: Yes. Bring a radio over to Room 23, please. Chambermaid: What kind, sir? Mr. Clinton: Something to play CDs. And ... have you got any laptop computers in the hotel I can hire? Chambermaid: That is quite possible, Mr. Clinton, I’ll bring one in a quarter of an hour. Mr. Clinton: No, not here. The computer goes over to Room 23, too, and two lemonades, please. Chambermaid: I’ve already done that, sir. Mr. Clinton: Very nice then. ... I don’t think we need anything else so far. Chambermaid: A CD player, a laptop computer to Room 23 and one blanket over here, right? Mrs. Clinton: A thicker blanket than this one, please. And two hot coffees. Chambermaid: Yes, madam. You may use the heater you can find in the wardrobe. The socket is over there, Mrs Clinton. Mr. Clinton: The light in the bathroom isn’t working. Bring us a new bulb, too. Chambermaid: Yes, sir. I’ll send the electrician over here right away. Mr. Clinton: Is there a socket for my (electric) razor? Chambermaid: Yes, there is. It’s near the basin on the right side of the mirror. Mrs. Clinton: Well, John. Shall we go (and) see how the boys are doing there in their enormous room? I suppose they’ve already liked it.

Mr. Clinton: How are you doing, my little men? Frank: Well, father, I don’t quite like this room. It’s big all right. But where’s the wardrobe to hang our clothes? Mrs. Clinton: Oh, Frankie! Here’s one. It’s a built-in wardrobe. Look how many hangers it’s got. Nickie: Mummy, I like the room a lot. Look! Here’s another aquarium, too, and there’s a huge telly. I wanna watch it. Frank: How can I do without music? There’s not the lousiest radio in here. Mr. Clinton: Don’t (you) worry, son. I’ve already asked for a CD player. It’s on the way (over) here now. Frank: Sorry then, Dad. I think I was awfully wrong. I like this room a lot. Nickie: Do tell, Frankie. ... Hey, folks, come and look at what they’re showing on television. ... Look! That big guy’s that way. He’s so well-oiled, and he’s driving the big bus. Mrs. Clinton: Now, Nick, turn off the television immediately! Go wash your hands. We’re going downstairs to have dinner now. ... Well, what are you waiting for? Move! Nickie: Yes, Mum. I’m so hungry I can eat the whole horse. Should I wash my feet, too? Mr. Clinton: Very smart, indeed. You ought to be watching your tongue, baby son. Go do what your mother’s told you (to do). … Move it!
